Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA)
Founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and eight other co-founders, AKA was the first sorority of the Divine Nine, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, is renowned for its trailblazing role in promoting community service and educational advancement. With a mission to serve all mankind, AKA’s international programs focus on health, economic development, and education. Notable initiatives include the “Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation” and health awareness campaigns like “Heart Health.”
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST)
Founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University by 22 undergraduate women from Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, is committed to public service and social justice. Its programs address critical societal issues such as economic development, educational enrichment, and political advocacy. DST’s flagship initiatives include “Delta Days at the Nation’s Capital,” where members advocate for legislative changes, and “Delta Academy,” aimed at supporting young women.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (ZPB)
Zeta Phi Beta was founded January 16, 1920, at Howard University by Arizona Cleaver, Pearl Neal, Myrtle Tyler, and others. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, is dedicated to fostering a sense of community through its emphasis on service and sisterhood. Its programs, such as “Z-Hope” (Zeta’s Helping Other People Excel), focus on health awareness, educational support, and community service. The sorority is also known for its advocacy in social issues and philanthropy.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SGRho)
On November 12, 1922, at Butler University Sigma Gamma Rho was founded by Seven educators at Butler University. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, mission is to enhance community life through its initiatives focused on education, health, and economic development. Programs such as “Project Reassurance” provide support for women and girls, while the sorority’s efforts in health awareness and mentoring further its mission of service and empowerment.
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (IPT)
On September 19, 1963, at Morgan State University 12 students at Morgan State University decided to create Iota Phi Theta. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, was established to meet the changing needs of Black college students. Its focus on community service, leadership development, and academic excellence is reflected in initiatives like “Iota’s Men of Distinction,” which supports the educational and personal growth of young men.

Founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University it was founded by seven African American men at Cornell University. As the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity for African American men, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, has a longstanding tradition of advocating for civil rights and educational excellence. Notable programs include “Project Alpha,” which provides mentorship for young men, and the “Alpha Phi Alpha Educational Foundation,” supporting educational endeavors.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (KAP)
Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University by ten students at Indiana University. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, emphasizes achievement and community service. On November 17, 1911, at Howard University three Howard University students and one graduate decided to create Omega Psi Phi. Its programs include “Omega’s Health Initiatives” and “Achievement Week,” celebrating accomplishments in diverse fields. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (PBS)
On January 9, 1914, at Howard University three Howard University students had banned together to make Phi Beta Sigma. Phi Beta Sigma’s mission is commitment to service, scholarship, and brotherhood.
